]]>Throughout musical history we’ve seen politics and music compliment each other, but also tear each other apart. It’s up to artists and their creative freedom to choose if they want to play into the political music scene, or leave themselves out all together. One Ottawa band who has embraced their distaste for many political events is Josephine Leone. This “groovy, grungy, gritty” rock n’ roll band released “Freedom Song” in 2022 and played it live at Bluesfest. While the track may have a laid-back energy, the message is powerful nonetheless.
‘Never before have there been so many protests happening all around the world. Innocent civilians oppressed by their own governments and stripped of their human rights, fuelled by propaganda designed to divide us and turn us all against each other.’
Their hope is that music will unite everyone together again amidst this chaos.
‘Freedom Song is about fighting back against this corruption and tyranny. It’s about uniting with each other to stand up against those who oppress us who want to control our lives. It’s about spreading hope to the world that we can, and we will, take back our freedom’. Now available on all streaming sites!
Join Josephine Leone and the band, along with Edison Rupert and Sophia Duhaime, at the Rainbow Bistro on April 21st, 2023, for a powerful event that will capture the attention of many. Doors open at 8:00pm, with pre-sale tickets available for $15 or $20 at the door. The link to purchase tickets for the show is provided at the bottom of this article.

]]>“Patience” follows the energy of his current discography, with it being modern R&B. The beat is catchy and consistent coupled with AZYM’s smooth voice makes this perfect for easy-listening. To accompany the track, a music video was developed. He teased his fans by posting behind the scene clips on his social media and when the video was released, fans were pleased. The video has a no-frills authenticity which leaves the audience feeling closer to AZYM.
While the more personal foundation is great, the colour palette was the cherry on top. The moody colours guide the listener into how they should feel and vibe with this track. Furthermore, many clips of AZYM recording are sprinkled throughout. This technique is a pillar BPM Studio style, of which the editor and director of the video, Jayden Moyes, is a part of. This allows the audience to peek into the recording process and show them that AZYM loves his craft.
With this being AZYM’s first official video, we hope future ones continue to capture his audience.
Filmed and edited by BPM Studio.

DRIVE has gotta be my favourite music videos, and the fact that it’s created by an Ottawa video production company makes it even better. It’s great to see local talent team up with local businesses.
The video is so heat, especially since it has a mix of animated and realistic shots, the anime clips really add a touch of surrealism to the video. Elle pulled through with the vibes in the video.
I love how hyped up everything is, especially with the cars. It really gave me Fast and Furious vibes. The song makes me feel like I’m speeding down a highway or street racing, with a mix of being on cloud 9. Like the dopamine levels are super high up there.
The chorus gives me a mix of the song Bad Girls by M.I.A, and Tokyo Drift by Teriyaki Boyz. If you are looking for a banger to play in the club or to drive to, or to just get super hyped to, this is the song to put on!

Since the first day he joined the FFA team, DJ Fids has been known for his creative ideas. They range from putting his face on a T-Shirt, to collaborating with the CASCO charity board to host a basketball tournament here at Lansdowne Park. CASCO is a charity organization within the Telfer School of Business at The University of Ottawa. Together we raised over $2000 to support the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario(CHEO) who CASCO raises funds for. The spectrum changed once the team got a taste of giving back to the community.
In the midst of the pandemic slowing the world down around him, DJ Fids did as we all had too; slow down with it. Taking a step back and spending time with his family, the boy never strayed far from the cause. As the world was put on pause, another passion of his started to come to fruition, Film Photography. Being present either on the tables or to support the culture, picking up cameras and burning through rolls of film became a hobby for him over the years.
As he dug through his archives and began to share his work via @fidspics on Instagram it became apparent he wanted to find a way to use his talent to give back to the community. Pairing with Y.A.A.C.A.N this year Danny has decided to invest his time into some non-profit charity work of his own. He is going to be selling prints of his film photography and taking 100% of proceeds to donate to different initiatives around the city. Given how hard the COVID-19 Pandemic has hit the homeless population across the country, the Ottawa Shelters are where he’s set his eyes on first.
Be on the lookout for where all this goes as he tries to navigate launching his own charitable initiative right here in Ottawa. We are unbelievably proud of this guy and will do nothing but support him any way we can. To learn more about this new project visit Daniel Fidaoui’s new website.

An individual who has been on our radar for a while now is Jae Anthony. He is a Culinary Chef from Montreal. Jae Anthony made his presence known in Ottawa in a short period of time. Chef Jae made the move from Montreal to Ottawa with a business venture you might know as “Tingz.” After months of hard work, his first venue in Ottawa opened in March of 2020, pre pandemic. With only one week of service under their belt and a buzz already circulating around the city of a sit-down Caribbean style restaurant, they were forced to close their doors along with the rest of the world. The timing was disheartening but Chef Jae didn’t shy from the challenge. With experience in take-out driven restaurants, Chef Jae Anthony quickly adapted and pushed the “Tingz” take-out to the best of it’s abilities. He surely had his work cut out for him as they were consistently busy throughout the entire Provincial Lockdown. Letting his food do the talking, Chef Jae Anthony organically proved his reputation within the Ottawa Restaurant Community.
Photo taken by Eric Stone from FFA
The success of “Tingz” was unfortunately brought to an abrupt halt. While many may have assumed a new business navigating the pandemic may have struggled far too much to endure. The closure of “Tingz” was handled behind the scenes involving silent partners and contractual disputes. Regardless of the hope for resolution, “Tingz” doors were closed just 3 weeks shy of the secondary Provincial Lockdown, leaving staff and patrons alike in lingo.
Fast forward to the new year, Chef Jae Anthony has continued to show his resilience and ability to pivot throughout these unpredictable times. Currently occupying a Ghost Kitchen space located at City Centre here in Ottawa, Jae is sporting not 1, but 2 operations running simultaneously. “Chef Jae Anthony Pop-Up” is pushing the beloved Caribbean style food that we all missed so dearly, while his new “Side Piece” project boasts a Southern take on his classic Caribbean cuisine. Be on the lookout for Fried Chicken galore, Mac N’ Cheese, Cornbread and more Southern Classics with a twist.

With it being Superbowl Sunday and not a bar in sight to sit down and order your favourite football comfort food, this is an amazing opportunity to support your local businesses. Our family over at The Senate Tavern locations, Clarence and Bank St, have tasked Chef Jae Anthony in curating their Superbowl Sunday take-out menu. With a “Side Piece” twist on your favourite football snacks, be on the lookout for: Jerk Chicken Nachos, Big Mac Sliders, Pineapple Scotch Bonnet Wings and the ever anticipated Cardiac Arrest dish. Luigi "City" Fidelia has always been someone we look up to at FFA. By constantly working on his craft and showing it in every release, City embodies everything we strive for here at Far From Average. Since returning to Ottawa, he has taken it upon himself to truly elevate the culture of our fine city. The level of creativity that stems from his home studio, "The Real House of Ensemble," sets a new standard for recording artists working out of Ottawa. His commitment couldn't be deterred as he handled putting together the space through this Pandemic caused by COVID-19. How thankful we are for his hard work as we now have this staple creative space to flourish from the heart of the downtown core.
Today we would like to take some time to congratulate City Fidelia on his newly appointed position of Program Director for CHUO 89.1FM. For those who don't know, CHUO 89.1FM is a community-based campus radio station located right here in Ottawa. The station itself pride's itself on playing what they want, not simply one genre of music or whats popular at the time. We are beyond confident that City Fidelia will have a massive impact on the radio station and provide a platform to showcase local creatives.
Tune in to City's newest release titled "Legacy" featuring Ottawa based Artist Hueso. One of our favourite songs from Hueso as he reveals a darker, more raw tone with his voice to show his versatility from his previous R&B releases. The hometown hero City Fidelia shows exactly what he's made of with a powerful and lyrically sound verse to solidify this single. We are looking forward to seeing what else these two bring to the table in the upcoming months. Congratulations on an amazing first release of the year!
]]>First single of the year for Black Iri$h! To start the year off we have a new tune from Black Iri$h and Ottawa artist Airborn. Things are constantly changing in the new world of today and some days, life doesn't feel real. We hope everyone can relate when they hear Airborn's catchy chorus. Iri$h comes in strong with his verse and the two both show up with the delivery. This is a collaboration we would like to see again in the future.
Keep an eye out for the music video, Black Iri$h had Ottawa's own 3FiftyCo film the video back in December 2020!

Newagehip aka Hippie received his first shot at the Capcity showdown back in December, 2014. He was offered a spot in the competition after dropping freestyles at a bush party in Embrun. Since then Hip has performed over 70 shows in the city of Ottawa. Opening for artists such as MGK at Algonquin Commons, Freddie Gibbs at Babylon Nightclub, & Comethazine at the Bourbon Room!
A big turning point was when Hip crossed paths with Kyazze & Black Irish in 2015 after opening for Jazz Cartier at Ritual Nightclub with Swift Crew. Kyazze & Hip have since thrown countless parties & shows all over the city and Hip never throws a show without his partner Dashype.

Ottawa artist Yung Heat has jumped the scale with his newest song featuring Eros North and the Ottawa Mayor himself, City Fidelia.
Originally born in Scarborough but now considered an Ottawa Native. Yung Heat has been involved in the music game for the past 8 years. He started making mixes and mashups for two years which then transitioned to producing.
This song would be a club banger if that were a thing in 2020, but for all my gym lovers, this one's for you.

5 months after celebrating our daughters 1st birthday, a 32-year old black man from Minnesota by the name of Philando Castile was driving with his girlfriend and her 4-year old daughter. When he was pulled over during a traffic stop and fatally shot 7 times in front of his loved ones for explaining to the police officer that he had a registered firearm in the vehicle. Being a bi-racial father in North America, I am absolutely terrified to walk outside and carry on with my daily routine over concerns that I may not make it home to my wife and kids one night. The events which transpired that day resonate with me and instinctively my primary thought is; how is this going to affect that little girl in the backseat who just witnessed her mother’s boyfriend get murdered in broad daylight by a police officer? Her life will never be the same after experiencing something that traumatic at such a young age. I couldn’t begin to imagine the challenges she will face growing up, all of which emerged from this terrible although realistic first impression of the world we live in.
Jonathan Ferreira and his son Malakai
I now find myself nervous commuting to and from work on the daily basis, looking over my shoulder for no particular reason. Going out on a limb, I can confidently say that I am not the only coloured individual whose heart has sunk into their stomach while being behind the wheel and passing a police cruiser or hearing the sound of sirens approach, that adrenaline eventually makes you paranoid. My fiancé drives our vehicle whenever we go out as a family, mainly to relieve my own personal anxiety and to ensure we take every precaution to avoid a confrontation with law enforcement. Not because we’re committing a crime or performing illegal activities, but because these days you don’t have to go to jail to receive the death sentence. You could get killed in your vehicle, house, even on your own front lawn by the same people appointed to serve and protect you. Asides from enforcing the law and investigating crimes, the role of a police officer is to keep the peace and protect the people. All people! I’d do anything for my kids, it’s my job as a father to ensure their safety and well-being but instead of doing your job, you’re making mine harder.
What do you tell your kids?
I remember as a child my mother sitting me down and explaining, “you can go out with your friends just be home before dark and if you run into trouble call 911,” I couldn’t imagine myself having that same conversation with my kids today. Instead, am I supposed to tell them the truth? Since you're a member of the black community, and considered a person of colour, you will unfortunately in most cases be viewed as a suspect, regardless of the situation. Furthermore, expect to get judged, abused (mentally and physically) not to mention labelled throughout the course of your life. Being a person of colour, not only is it every man and woman for themselves but you’re ultimately considered the underdog in society and given limited opportunities compared to others whether that be in the form of education or within the workforce and beyond.
Jonathan Ferreira and his daughter Aaliyah Marie
Segregation is real! For example, my mother is the 1st child of 13 others and had a significantly lighter complexion in comparison to her siblings. I’ve heard of racism within black people, family members like my mom’s who shunned her out for being different and insisted my grandfather had an affair with a white woman. With that being said I think it’s important to note that racism comes in many forms, although we’ve seen a large number of incidents stem from white supremacy groups and corrupt justice systems, (undoubtedly leading to trust issues between members of the black community) these aren’t the only sources of discrimination. According to the 1860 census, an African-American cotton gin maker and blacksmith by the name of William Ellison Jr. owned 53 slaves making him the largest of the 171 black slaveholders in South Carolina alone.
There is only good vs. evil regardless of skin colour, what we need to understand as a minority is that classifying a group of individuals is ultimately what created this divide and you can’t fight fire with fire. There are good people throughout the world, who are ready to stand together for equality and put an end to the violence we’re experiencing today, within our communities. We need to encourage and support one another regardless of race, colour or background to get the message across - it’s everybody vs. racism! In my lifetime I’ve accumulated my fair share of racial encounters making me question some people’s morals, beliefs and up-bringing as racism isn’t born, it's taught. Since becoming a father I’ve begun to question our position in society as a black community and realized that nothing has changed in 100 plus years, as Will Smith said, “racism isn’t getting worse, it’s getting filmed.”
The movement and phrase “Black Lives Matter” is not denoting members of other races or ethnicities but was created as a cry for help by the black community who continue to lose sons, daughters, husbands and wives because of the colour of their skin. I don’t want my children to be the next it’s time for change, if not now then when? What if Ahmad Abrey was your son? What if Regis Korchinski-Paquet was your daughter? How many more do we need to lose for it to matter? How close to home does it have to hit before you decided to stand up and speak out? I’m not willing to wait and find out, neither should you! Enough is enough.

Mutabazi only started considering the possibility of music as a career in 2015, while residing in Denver, CO. “I used to just mess around and do different voices with friends before I figured out I can sing and switch melodies to how I wanted. I later figured out I was pretty good at it.”

Let’s get down to the details ~
SONG REVIEW & RATING ⤦
The song starts out robust in nature with a very dark sounding repeating echo of Young Astronomer from the shadows with his signature raw vocals, a mixture of ambient noises - build up & trap sounding 808’s make this song super unique in its own lane, local up and coming bass music producer Trenchfoot (Big Tooth Records) showcases his versatility in both making/mastering a professional track & showing how easy it is for him to play around and instantly make a hit, I think they made a deadly combination with this truly original sounding production.
With the catchy repeating hook of, “I be rolling don’t really know where I’m going, I don’t know I don’t know where I’m going, passed the store the liquor store I am so emotional breathe the dro and gain control I be in my zone I be in my zone”. It’s safe to say Young Astronomer is clearly out of his comfort zone and looking to emerge as not only a Hiphop Artist, but as a musical artist just the same by trying out new genres and tweaking the sound, working with new acts & trying to stay consistent in a ever-growing industry.
I think Young Astronomer’s latest singles “IDK” and his earlier release “Cloud 9” both have great potential to chart within its own suited playlists, and rightfully so! - Congrats on the successful release guys, can’t wait to hear new music.

]]>Now all the Provinces are really pushing Social Distancing and telling everyone to stay at home. Which is a good a thing. A lot of Canadians are waiting to receive there EI, but what's happening to our Small Businesses we all love and support? We've all seen a few things in the media, some small businesses are opening for take out. But a lot of them are still staying closed. If you're interested in helping out Small Businesses, please read the email below. This will give you a understanding on whats happening, sent from the owner of the Senate Tavern, Steve Ryan.
First, let me start by saying we feel for everyone during this truly trying time. It is taking a toll on the personal lives of many, and our sympathies go out to all that have been affected.
Although we typically stay far away from the realm of politics and social policy, we feel compelled to address some concerns that will undoubtedly affect our business and many of our industry colleagues.
We understand that there is no road map for what is happening right now and many small to medium sized businesses have been faced with a wide variety of challenges and decisions on how to handle what is being thrown their way.
When it comes to the restaurant industry, some have decided to provide take out, some have made changes to their model in an attempt to keep core employees on the payroll, while others have made the difficult decision of closing altogether. Although we have decided to be close entirely, we strongly support those who have found a way to make things work in these desperate times.
I would like to commend everyone in their efforts to help keep people safe while trying to remain resilient.
Over the past two weeks, the government has attempted to provide various solutions to many of the obstacles this situation has created. They have spoken a great deal about providing Canadians with the support necessary to get them through this crisis, and I applaud them in these efforts.
The government has also put forward quite a few programs that are aimed at helping small business. At face value, these may seem to solve some of the problems that are being thrust upon our business community, but when you take a closer look, it provides little to no help for small to medium sized restaurants.
To paint the picture effectively, I will give you the situation we are facing at our Bank Street location:
On March 1, we paid rent. On March 15, we closed our doors, and they have remained closed since.
Although The Senate on Bank Street was open until March 15, business was down close to 40% in those first two weeks of March, as customers began to feel uncomfortable with the emerging health crisis. From March 15 onward, we have had no revenue.
We paid our employees up to their final day, and then were forced to lay off our entire staff to allow them to apply for employment insurance (at the guidance of government). Therefore, in March we have incurred expenses of 50% payroll and 100% rent in a month where we saw little to no revenue.
Let me stress that this is not only about our business. I’m using The Senate’s experience as an example to provide insight as to what the restaurant industry is going through as a whole. Many of the restaurants we all love and include in our daily, weekly or monthly routines are in the exact same situation—without a clear plan, they will not have the means to make it through this crisis.
We are now seeing many restaurants partially opening to offer take out, pick up or delivery. These are establishments that do not have the resources to offer these services, but are doing so simply because they are fearful of the unknown.
If we cannot protect the restaurants that employ the people in our community, then our loved ones, friends and neighbours will not have a job to return to once this is all over.
We are now facing another rent payment tomorrow which will put further burden on our financial situation. I know many other institutions are in the same position. The government has decided to let individual landlords and tenants work out payments on their own, and with varying opinions on what should be done a great deal of animosity will fester between both parties. Is it right for a landlord to expect rent from a property that is no longer legally able to operate under the terms it was originally leased? Is it reasonable for the landlord to not receive rent, forcing them to be unable fulfill their own obligations and incur unwanted financial stress? I would say it is not.
Although it is NOT being offered, is it reasonable for the government to ask a small business to take out a 100k loan to pay rent and utilities for 3 months while not being able to operate? It would take a restaurant with a yearly revenue of $1,000,000.00 a full year to repay that debt before it would be in the black and that’s if everything returns to normal immediately.
I implore the government to address this situation head on and to do what is right for all small businesses—and in turn, all Canadians.
If all commercial mortgages were to be suspended interest free until the government feels business can open again, landlords could then pass this benefit on to their tenants.

There needs to be a clear conversation about this issue and it needs to happen now. It is the single most important conversation surrounding small businesses today.
If you would like to help restaurants and other small businesses get the support they need, please share this message with others, and contact your local councillors and MP.
There is also a very worthwhile movement started by restauranteurs that is gaining a lot of momentum. It speaks to the challenges we are currently facing and provides solutions that could help lessen damages to the hospitality industry.
